We often have pupils come to us for driving lessons in a panic because they are nearing the end of the 2 year Theory Test cut-off date.

If you didn't know - from the date you pass your Theory Test, you have 2 years within which to take the practical driving test before you have to re-sit the Theory Test again.

To avoid the panic (and cost) of having to re-take the Theory Test, it's obviously better to take the driving test as soon as possible after passing.

However, life doesn't always work out how we plan it, and there are many reasons why driving lessons and the test can be delayed.

Putting unexpected problems to the side, we always tell our pupils to take some driving lessons before they book or pass the Theory Test. This way, you and your driving instructor will have a better idea of how long it will take to get to test standard (every pupil is different).

Even if you are confident you can pass the Theory Test, the best advice is to wait until you have had some driving lessons.

The DSA say that the average amount of time it takes to get a Theory Test date is 2 weeks. This means you should be able to book and pass your Theory Test easily within your course of driving lessons (The DSA say that the average amount of time it takes to get a Driving Test date is 9 weeks).

To summarise: avoid adding the extra pressure of outside deadlines to your Theory Test, you'll find it easier to concentrate on the job in hand.
